‘Burn A Koran Day’ Church’s Web Site Pulled

First lets start with a bit of background on this interesting piece of Americana.

Surely by now you’ve heard of the Dove World Outreach Center, the Florida church that plans to hold a “Koran burning day” on September 11, the nine year anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Pretty much nobody think it’s a good idea, from Palin to Obama, from Gen. Petraeus to the FBI. Now involved: Rackspace. Yes, the popular Web host has pulled the plug on the church’s Web site, citing a violation in its service’s “hate-speech provision of [its] acceptable-use policy.”

A Rackspace spokesman told CNN that the cancellation wasn’t “a constitutional issue [but] a contract issue.”

Of course, the church, led by Terry Jones (who looks remarkably like Otto von Bismarck), is screaming bloody murder, saying that the shutdown is an “indirect attack” on its freedom of speech and that Rackspace wants to “shut us down.”

I’m going to assume that the church knows that “freedom of speech” only applies to the government. If you sign a contract with a company that says you can’t (can’t~!) do X, and then you go ahead and do X, you can’t be all, “but, but my freedom of speech!”

This had nothing to do with Freedom of speech. This had to do with Rackspace voiding a contract with a Client that is in clear breach of the Terms of Use as agreed up on by entering into a contract with Rackspace. There are also some claims that there were thousands of DDoS attacks on the site which also would have created an interruption of service to other customers. Here is where I think Rackspace did the right thing:

As for Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Speech isn’t infinite, there are limitations and they are that Freedom of Speech is granted as long as it does cause defamation or libel to another person, entity or thing either directly or in-directly.

Even though I do think they had a right to have their site up, they did not have the right to inflict damages upon other parties who are hosted as well at Rackspace.

People need to stop harping about Free Speech when its convenient, because when its you affected your just as pissed as the other people at Rackspace and you realize that their right to speech does not negate your right to the quality of service your paying for. So don’t complain its a violation of Freedom of Speech until you look at all the aspects of the issue.

So what do you think, share your comments please
